So I recently decided to do a little decluttering in my closet and drawers. I find that decluttering, at least for me, is the power of mind over matter. It can be really hard to let things go. All the questions go on in my head: "what if I want to wear that? I hope to fit into that someday. Oh but I got that (on this special date, for this special occasion, etc)." Our stuff can hold sentimental value. It can be a link between our past selves and our future.
I know whenever I do a major decluttering I feel a sense of relief. I was able to get rid of 3 garbage bags filled with old clothes. The sad thing is I still have alot more I can get rid of, but I know it is hard. I like the stuff. I liked it when I bought it. Why do I have to get rid of it? What if I need it.? In reality, I wont miss it. I wont miss it. I'll forget I ever had it. In the end it is just stuff. Plus, Iike having the extra space and seeing all those extra hangers. I have a very small closet because we have a small house. All that space and all those hangers is like a fresh start. It also gives me space (and justification) for new stufff, to add new trends.
I also feel that what can make style unique. As much as I enjoy seeing all the outfits on all the bloggers, everyone looks the same. They are all wearing the same new things and it is not uniqu. I like when I see the mixtures of old and new, inexpensive and expensive. Style should be unique.
I guess what I am saying (after my long rant) is that it is important to make your mind stronger than the matter and let go. Start fresh and get rid of those things sitting in your closets or drawers for months. You wont miss them, trust me, but don't go and get rid of everything. If those old things still fit, then keep them. If those old pair of boots or old pair of jeans still fit, and you still like them, and you still wear them, then keep them. You dont need to get rid of all the old for the new just because of a trend or because it is what everyone else is doing. Be unique. Be you.
