Now that Memorial Day has come and passed, schools are getting out and the weather is warming up it is starting to feel alot like summer out there. I know I have been feeling it. This is my first summer down in the South (in case you are new to me, I am originally from Chicago and just moved down to Savannah, GA). The weather has so far been a HOT one. Back in Chicago, I know many people are not yet feeling the summer. They have been swamped with rain and temps that start hinting at summer and then drop down low. This is one thing I am not missing. Lately, I have bringing out my favorite items that I found to get me prepped and ready for the summer and would like to share them with you!
The summer sun is no joke, especially down in here in the south. It is very strong and I have felt the effects. I have already had my first sunburn and have learned that I need better protection from the elements. The skin on the face is very important to protect. Without protecting it you are at risk of getting skin cancer as well as those devilish wrinkles and sun spots
I have been seeing more and more sun hats around that are being used as adorable accessories. I have seen them in a multitude of colors, adorable sayings written on the brims, cute embroidery, and even adorable bows. They have come in so many shapes and sizes. It seems that more and more people are understanding the importance of good protection and channeling that into a great fashion statement.
I found the super adorable hat above at Kohl's and is by Lauren Conrad. It is currently only $16 and I am just in LOVE with the bow on the back. It doesn't have as big of a brim as a beach hat but still frames the face enough to protect it from the sun. It is the perfect hat to wear around town during the day, out in the garden, or a brunch date with your girls. I adore the comfort and quality of the hat and will be spending alot of time wearing this cutie! I have linked below several other options as well in case this look is not your thing or also looking for a traditional beach hat with the bigger brim, cute color, or cute saying.
Who doesn't want to live in sandals in the summer? Not only are they so comfortable but they are so easy to put on and off and are great in the heat. The work well with dresses, skirts, shorts, or even jeans. I love having slides in different colors so they can match any outfit as well as have them add a cute pop of color to any neutral outfit.
I found these adorable and super comfy slides, also at Kohls. They come in a multitude of colors and you can pick them up for less than $13! For me, once the warm weather hits I start feeling inspired by pretty and bright colored clothing and accessories. The more colorful, the better!
This warm weather is bringing out the need to show more skin, between cute skirts and dresses, shorts, tanks and tees and bathing suits. . It is important to have nice skin. I like the feeling of smooth skin and it helps make a tan (whether it is real or fake) just look better. I try to exfoliate about 2-3 times a week. Not only is this important for good skin care but it that little bit of pampering I do for myself and make my shower feel more like a spa experience.
My trusted exfoliator has been Dove Exfoliating Body Polish which I normally purchase at Target. I have tried the blue one which is Macadamia and Rice Milk which has a nice gentle smell but lately I have been into the purple which is the lavender and coconut milk because I find the lavender to soothing and relaxing (which is what the pregnant mama needs right now. The polish comes in 4 different colors and scents.
The reason why I love the Dove brand polish is, first, because it is a great price! A jar is less than $6 and usually lasts me about a couple months depending on how much and how often you use it, which for me is 3x/week. The scents are relaxing and gentle. The scrubbing is gentle. I have used other exfoliators and some have been a little too rough but the Dove brand feels scrubby but not painful or rough. My skin feels soother after using it as well as extra moisturized.
Light, Fresh Scent
In the summer, I really prefer a light scent. I like something fresh or tropical scented. One of my favorite everyday scents that is very light and fresh scented is Vera Want Embrace Green Tea and Pear Blossom that I have found at Kohl's. Vera Wang Embrace comes in several different colors and scents. The green is my favorite for the everyday as I feel it is the lightest and most gentle. I have the yellow one as well which I love but is a bit stronger. In my line of work as a hospice social worker, I have alot of patients that can't be around too strong of perfumes and scented lotions. This green embrace has been tolerated the most by my patients I love that it isn't too strong and overpowering that it has even been great around those individuals that are sensitive to scents. There is something about the heat and the sweat, the sunshine and the breeze, the beach and the salty air that makes me feel that a strong scented perfume feels too heavy.
I don't know about you but I feel ready for summer. I have been down here in the south for 1 month and have already been at the beach twice and looking forward to a ton more. Bring on the sunshine!
