So I keep hearing girls and other bloggers talk about going a good 3 or more days without washing their hair. I never was really interested in doing this. My first thought was always "ew". My second thought was always "my hair can't do this". I don't have thick hair but I wouldn't necessarily call it fine either. It is average but I have alot of hair. It looks very thick and full when I curl it but lays pretty flat and lifeless when it is straight. In the past my hair will get oily and greasy after even a day without washing it so going 3 days is a bit of a stretch for me. Now as I am old I have found my hair a bit less greasy so I decided to try this out for myself this past week.
Tuesday was the last time I washed my hair and did not wash it yet until Saturday. On the days between washing I used a dry shampoo. I have been using Dove Refresh and Care dry shampoo. I find it to work very well, has a nice scent, and is a great cost so overall I find it to be the best value. I have purchased mine at Target (you can find the exact one HERE) but I am sure you can find it at most major retailers.
I have read that when the hair is washed less it is better to style. I am hoping that this is true as my hair can be hard to style. It doesn't hold a curl very well. It is super frustrating so if this can help my hair hold the curl then I am going to try it!
On Thursday I used my dry shampoo to freshen up the hair and curled it with my straightener. I wore it half up and half down with a cute little bow hair tie. On Friday I put it up in a pony with a bow scrunchie.
So will I keep doing this? Yes, yes I will! I think this makes the most sense and there are multiple reasons why:
1. This is a time saver
I am a busy mom and I work full time. It is hard to find time to do my hair everyday and mornings can be very busy especially on the days that Bree has school It is just me in the mornings as my husband is at work so getting myself ready, my daughter ready, and her backpack ready is alot. It took so much less time getting ready with just some dry shampoo and a straightener. I had much less stress in the morning without the feeling of needing to rush
2. More volume
My hair had alot more texture and volume. It didn't feel greasy or oily. It did not feel dirty but the dry shampoo spray and bit of dirt left a good base. My hair seemed more full and had a nice lift at the roots. It had a nice thickness to it rather than just falling flat.
3. Better hold
My curls stayed better throughout the day. I have heard the concept that dirty hair is easier to style and hold a style better and this seems to have been true. My hair tie stayed up throughout the day rather than falling down. My curls actually looked better and thicker and my hair curled easier with this bit of dirtiness and texture.
4. Cute hair accessories
When my hair is in this state of dirtiness I used some cute hair accessories to put the focus on the cute hair bow rather than any inkling of dirt. These cute hair accessories are from Jane. If you don't know about Jane, let me tell you. It is an adorable website where darling little boutiques go to sell their merchandise. They sell just about everything. There are new sales everyday and they last for a couple days before they go away. Often, I will see repeat items being sold. Everything pictured I have purchased from Jane and have seen them several times and will probably continue seeing them, so keep on the lookout!
So in the end, I am totally on board with going longer between washes. Even by the time I did wash my hair, I felt my hair was in great shape. It seemed healthier, not so dried out and easier to style. It still never felt greasy since I was dry shampooing in between. By the end of the time I wore my hair up and wore a turtleneck or a blanket scarf so fit with my pulled back pony or messy bun. If you were on my and not wanting the feel of dirty hair, I encourage you to give it a try and see for yourself!
