If you asked me a couple months ago if I would want to go get eyelash extensions I would have been indifferent. What do I need them for? I use mascara. I have false lashes for those times I really want my eyes to pop. Why would one get eyelash extensions? Well I have have officially been converted and now I am not so sure I can live without them.
So what are they? Unfortunately, I could not watch the process as I needed to keep my eyes closed the entire time but my girl Kimberly at 40 Volume Salon and Spa in Savannah was amazing and walked me through what they are. So they are basically false lashes that are "superglued" to your real lashes. No, she does not use super glue on my lids. It is a silicone based glue that has extra staying power, compared to the glue in your false lash kit. Kimberly builds her own fans which means she takes the individual strands and makes them herself as we go rather than using premade ones. This helps her make extensions that fit the desired look, helps her control the process, and well in my eyes (no pun intended) really makes her a true lash artist. She bundles a few strands together to make a little fan and then glues that fan to the real lashes. What do these fans look like? Well if you were to go looking for DIY eyelashes for a night out of fun, they look like the individual lashes you would find. Something that looks like this...
I realize this is easier to see rather than for me to describe.
How long does this take? Well the first time you get them done it could take about 2 1/2 hours so plan your day accordingly. Yes, it is lengthy but it actually felt much quicker than it went. Between building the fans and gluing the individual lashes it makes sense. A good lash artist should be a perfectionist. I would want perfection with the time and money spent on the extensions. Don't worry, though because it would not be this long in subsequent visits.
One of the nice things about this is that you can have them look the way you want them to look. Do you want them be dramatic or natural? Are you looking more for length or volume? If you wear false lashes then it may help to bring them to show your lash artist. I wanted the to look natural but still have some drama. I wanted some length and fullness. What I described as the kind of falsies I wear at home my lash artist Kim was able to recreate perfectly!!
Subsequent visits? Wait, what? Yes, you will have to go back every couple of weeks to get them filled. They aren't permanent and you can expect that after enough rubbing, washing, sleeping on them, crying, laughing, allergies, sneezing, and just everyday life they will start to shed off. You shouldn't be surprised by this though. We all lose lashes everyday because of shedding so the extensions are bound to shed off with them. I lost a few the first night and got worried, but it is completely normal. The first 24hrs are the most delicate as it takes that long for the glue to cure. Your subsequent visits should take about an hour.
How do I care for them? This is something your lash artist would go over with you but I will give you a little overview. Again, the first 24hrs they are the most delicate. Do not get them submerged under water during that time and don't rub them. After that you still want to be gentle with the rubbing. Use a little baby shampoo or a lash cleaner and rinse them. You can brush them with an eyelash brush. Also, remember to be careful around heat such as over a stove or in the oven. You don't want to melt them
So what are the benefits? Well, one of the major ones are the amount of time I am saved in the morning. I don't have to go through all the trouble of curling, priming, and putting on mascara. Some days I don't even feel like putting on any eye makeup and honestly you can't even tell. It looks like I am wearing makeup with my lashes. Another reason is that I just feel pretty more often. My confidence has increased. Whether I am at work, at the gym or just waking up I just feel pretty. My husband was a big fan of them too! When I first told him about getting lash extensions he was not sure why I needed them. "Your lashes look fine," he said. After I came back from the salon he was very intrigued. It put a little spark back in our relationship. The lashes have a sexy factor to them, this "come and get me" vibe. I'm not complaining and I am pretty sure your partner won't either. More time, increased confidence, and an extra spark of love all sound like benefits worth every penny and every minute of the time.
Where should I go? Well if you live in Savannah or the Savannah area or even planning on a trip to visit, I would HIGHLY suggest contacting Kimberly at 40 Volume Salon and Spa. Her work is pure art and the process was perfect. She made me feel comfortable the entire time. She explained what she was doing, checked in to make sure I was laying in a comfortable position, had music playing and engaged me in conversation. She was very gentle. The salon itself is so adorable. It was very mundane on the outside and looked no frills but it was the cutest place inside. It was much bigger than it looked from the outside, was decorated so adorably and felt like a very fun vibe for us females to spend a day because let's be honest: we deserve a day of pampering! I have been looking for a great salon to get my hair cut and styled and this will have to be the place I go. Plus they have hours that are convenient. I work full time and about an hour away from home so weekend hours are most convenient. I have been looking for a salon that offers that and this one does.
